Brief synopsis
You might think that reading philosophy is a passive activity, being intellectually swept along by the tide of argument like a stick on a river.

You might think that reading philosophy is a passive activity, being intellectually swept along by the tide of argument like a stick on a river. Nothing could be further from the truth. When reading philosophy, you should rationally resist the argument put to you, even if you happen to agree with the conclusion, like a salmon trying to swim upstream. Rationally resisting an argument is actually doing philosophy. So, in reading philosophy, you are doing philosophy.
